STUDY ON THE NAMES of GOD

BY:  BARBARA J. STRAUSER

ADONAY:  This name of God is used exclusively as a divine name, and it translates to master.  It means LORD par excellence; LORD over all.  Adonay signifies His position as one who has authority over His people to reward the obedient and punish the disobedient.  This name is a reflection of something of the work of the LORD.   Adonay suggests His position as husband to Israel“For your Maker is your husband – the LORD Almighty is his name – the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.”  (Isaiah 54:5)

In Genesis 15:2, “Adonay” is translated “Sovereign” when Abram recognized God as the One in authority to provide:  “O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless…”

EL SHADDI:  All Sufficient God.  He is able for all things.  This name suggests the fruitfulness of God.  In Genesis 17:1, 2, it is stated: “The LORD appeared to Abram and said:  ‘I AM El Shaddi; walk before me blameless.  I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

EL ELYON:  God Most High, Only Supreme Being.  His distinctive character as Most High God is seen in Genesis 14:18 when Abram is blessed by Melchizedek, who is a pre-figure of the Messiah.  Then Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine.  He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram…  The one who blesses is higher than the one who is blessed.  Herein is a revelation of the Seed of Abraham; Melchizedek is Christ in another form blessing the progeny yet in the loins of Abram – in the form of the seed. The one being blessed is JESUS!

EL GIBBER: Mighty God, the God of creation and redemption.  This name refers to the Messiah, who is Christ.

ELOHIM:  GOD.  The first of the names of Deity to appear in the Bible; a plural noun in form, but is singular in meaning when it refers to the true God.  Elohim suggests the almightiness and the Trinity of God.

EL OLAM:  Eternal God; The Everlasting God Forever.  This name is described in Isaiah 40:28, 29“Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The LORD is the Everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary and his understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”  The significance of recognizing God as Eternal was signaled as Isaiah described Him by the name “Olam”, which is the Hebrew equivalent of the Greek “aion,” meaning age or ages.  This quoted Scripture depicts El Olam as the creator of the end of the Age of the Ages.

FATHER:  To me this is most precious name of all of the names of God.  Jesus Christ came to restore the world to the Father.  Humankind is returned to God’s family by means of Christ’s Spirit because God is the Father of Spirits.  When one is born again it is a rebirth of the Spirit of God in man.  The recreated Spirit of the Son within brings the person into relationship with the Father.

IMMANUEL:  God with us.  This name concerns Christ Jesus, the Messiah.

JESUS:  The Hebrew form of the name Jesus is Yahshua.  Yahshua means “YAHWEH IS SALVATION”.  This is the highly exalted Name that is above every name that is named in heaven and in earth.  The nature of God as Salvation was revealed in the man Christ Jesus.  Jesus is the only name before whom all things must bow.

MESSIAH:  The Anointed One; The Promised One of the Davidic Dynasty; Christ Jesus.  [There were, however, many prefigures of Messiah before the appearance of Jesus.]

PARACLETE:  One called along side to help; counselor, advocate, comforter, the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ.

YHWH:  The unspeakable name of the LORD of Israel.  This translates to Yahweh (Hebrew) and Jehovah (English).  Adam apparently knew God by the attributes that this name identifies.  It holds all of the attributes of the meaning of I AM; I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE. This form of the name of the LORD first appears in Genesis 2:4, “These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when the LORD [YHWH] God [EL] made the earth and heavens.”  This form of the name of God was present, but the first inhabitants of the earth did not know the full revelation of it.  Had it been there would have been no fall, and therefore no perfection of the race of man.

This name, Jehovah, also holds within it redemption – in place before the creation of man.  There are many aspects of this facet of God, and they identify and rescue man in the areas of his fallen position.

1.  Jehovah-jirah, the LORD will provide.

2.  Jehovah-rapha, the LORD who heals you.

3.  Jehovah-nissi, the LORD is my banner.

4.  Jehovah-shalom, the LORD is peace.

5.  Jehovah-tsidkenu, the LORD Our Righteousness.

6.  Jehovah-shammah, the LORD is there.

7.  Jehovah-sabaoth, the LORD is sovereign over all powers.
