Throughout many centuries the Prophets foretold intricate details of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of the Messiah. Amazingly, Christ fulfilled all these prophesies in detail. Consider the following….

PROPHECIES OF THE MESSIAH

ANCIENT PROPHETS DESCRIBE THE CHOSEN ONE

PLACE OF BIRTH

Prophecy:

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from eternal days. (Mic. 5:2)

Fulfillment:

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. (Matt. 2:1)

BORN OF A VIRGIN

Prophecy:

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Emmanuel. (Isa. 7:14)

Fulfillment:

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. (Matt. 1:18)

HIS TRIUMPHAL ENTRY

Prophecy:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He [is] just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zech. 9:9)

Fulfillment:

They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! `Blessed [is] He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!” 14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it. (John 12:13)

SOLD FOR 30 PIECES OF SILVER

Prophecy:

Then I said to them, “If it is agreeable to you, give [me] my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty [pieces] of silver. (Zech. 11:12)

Fulfillment:

Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him. (Matt. 26:15)

MONEY RETURNED FOR A POTTER’S FIELD

Prophecy:

And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”–the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter. (Zech. 11:13)

Fulfillment:

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. (Matt. 27:6)

SMITTEN AND SPAT UPON

Prophecy:

I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. (Isa. 50:6)

Fulfillment:

Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophecy!” And the guards took him and beat him. (Matt. 14:65)

SUFFERED TO FREE OTHERS

Prophecy:

Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. (Isa. 53:4)

Fulfillment:

When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.” (Matt. 8:16)

HANDS AND FEET PIERCED

Prophecy:

Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. (Psa. 22:16)

Fulfillment:

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” (John 20:27)

GIVEN GALL AND VINEGAR

Prophecy:

They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. (Psa. 69:21)

Fulfillment:

A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. (John 19:29)

HIS SIDE PIERCED

Prophecy:

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. (Zech. 12:10)

Fulfillment:

But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. (John 19:34)

SOLDIERS CAST LOTS FOR HIS COAT

Prophecy:

They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. (Psa. 22:18)

Fulfillment:

And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take (Mark 15:24)

NOT A BONE BROKEN

Prophecy:

He keeps all his bones: not one of them is broken. (Psa. 34:20)

Fulfillment:

But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. (John 19:33)

BURIED WITH THE RICH

Prophecy:

He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. (Isa. 53:9)

Fulfillment:

As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. (Matt. 27:57)

HIS RESURRECTION

Prophecy:

You will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. (Psa. 16:10)

Fulfillment:

And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him (Matt. 28:9)

HIS ASCENSION

Prophecy:

Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, [for] the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them. (Psa. 69:18)

Fulfillment:

And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. (Luke 24:50)
