THE LOGOS AND THE RHEMA

When I am making a statement that something is the word of God, I am talking about the rhema of God, something that I have received directly from God. I am not talking about the logos. The logos is what I tell you about what God told me, which becomes second hand or third hand or forth hand. That is logos, not the rhema of God, the life giving word of God, the light giving word of God. To me, the bible is the logos of God. The Holy Spirit can take that logos and make it rhema to you personally. This is one of the things that God showed early in the bible. When the Israelites had come out of Egypt, He kept showing them every day for forty years, that they had to deal personally with God daily by going out and picking up the manna off the ground to feed themselves; they could not store it up for two or three days. They had to go out every day and personally receive something from God. If they tried to store it up, it would go bad on them. It did not last overnight except on Friday, when they could pick up enough for the Sabbath day. It is the same thing with the WORD of God. You have to receive it from God every day in order to live before Him in His life giving word. This is the bottom line with God; this is what He wants.

Most people do not come before God every day to receive His living word. His life giving takes many forms. It is not just the word; it is much more than just a word. It is love; it is mercy; it is kindness; it is life; it is light; it is peace; it is joy; it is righteousness. All these things are what God is and all these things come from the Tree of Life. All these things are a Person, not a thing. Truth as a rhema is Jesus Christ. He is truth. Truth as logos may say, “I am right and you are wrong.” There, we are operating in the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Do you see the difference? The bible is wonderful, but it is only logos until the Holy Spirit takes it and makes it rhema to us, and yet, when people talk about the bible, they say, “It is the word of God.” They have elevated the bible to a place in the godhead, when it is only logos. It is ABOUT God. The rhema is a personal experience you have with God. You cannot include anyone else. Just like the manna in the wilderness had to be received daily, this is the same thing with the rhema. If you want to live spiritually in God, you must receive rhema every day. Without rhema, you become just another religious person. It is as clear as that. Most people feed on the logos all the time. They feed on something not directly from God, but something that came from God through someone else. There is nothing wrong with that, but it does not give you the full spiritual life from God. The logos is more of a shadow of things to come, whereas the rhema is the pure light from God. When the bible says that when the Spirit of truth comes, He will lead you into all truth, and you will have no need that any man teach you (1 Jn. 2:27), here God is talking about the rhema, the pure life and the pure light of God. I am not giving you a command; I am speaking to you a truth. This is not something that we can work up in ourselves, if we pray more, or if we read the bible more, or if we fast more. It has nothing to do with any of those things. It is strictly something that comes directly from God.

Rhema is the manna God gives to the new creation. There is nothing that we can work up to receive rhema. God is pure life and He doesn’t want us just to receive life; He wants us to BE pure life. 1 Cor. 15 brings it out clearly, when it says that Adam was a living soul, but Christ was a life giving Spirit, and He was the first of many brethren (Rom. 8:29). He was the first fruits of people who are exactly like Him. “In this is love perfected with us, that we may have confidence for the Day of Judgment, because as he is so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17, RSV). We ARE right now, life giving spirits, but to produce that life, we have to come every day to God to receive that life from Him, and that is the rhema I’m talking about. If we don’t receive pure life giving rhema from God, how can we be life giving spirits? It is impossible. This life flows out of the holy of holies, where no natural flesh, no Adamic nature can enter into at all. There is only God there. Everything I say to you is logos, because it is second hand. I am sharing with you something that God gave me directly from Him, but I am hoping that with this logos, it will stir you to such a point that you will cry out to God for rhema. When you read this, it will be strictly logos to you, unless the Holy Spirit imparts life to these words to cause them to become rhema to you.

The rhema is the pure life and the pure light coming directly from God to a person. There is no way that we can produce it at all. It comes directly from the Holy Spirit to us. The bible says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1, RSV). This is the first thing you have to do. What you hear, is it of God? And if it truly is of God, ask the Holy Spirit to make it rhema to you. As children in God, it is very hard to know whether something is from God or from the person’s self interest. As adults in God, we have discernment. We know that something is of the Holy Spirit because Jesus said, “My sheep know my voice” (Jn. 10:4,27). The Holy Spirit reveals to us that it is the word of God. Even though it is just logos, it is still from God and we need to ask Him to make it rhema to us.
