“He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. – He watereth the hills from His chambers.” (Psalm 104:10, 13)

We are reminded again of the record of Caleb’s daughter. In the process of taking and possessing the land before them, Caleb issued the challenge that to whichever young man should fight and conquer a certain city, to that man would he give his daughter to wife. And Othniel took the city and received the daughter. Then the daughter went to her father with the request: “Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a southland (the dry south country)’ give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether (lower) springs.” (Judges 1:15)

Here was sufficient supply of water for every need. We rejoice in the refreshings of our “mountain-top experiences,” but we rejoice also in the springs which are in the deepest valleys to sustain our journeys.

We need little comment on the “upper springs,” for the higher we climb into the celestial realms, the more precious His life in blessed reality. But what about when – “Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.” (Ps. 88:6) Ah, no matter how deep the valley, how very low the pit is, there is a spring for that region also. “If I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there.” (Ps. 139:8)

“Now that He (Christ) ascended, what is it but that He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, THAT HE MIGHT FILL ALL THINGS.” (Eph. 4:9-10) We know that He is “high and lifted up,” and that even the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him. He is above all, and yet ever drawing us upward unto Himself. Yet it must be remembered that He also first descended to the lower parts, so that HIS LIFE might fill all things. Filling only the heavens with His glory is not filling all things. He has purposed to fill lowest regions with His glory as well. “All my springs are in Thee.” (Ps. 87:7)
