NOVEMBER 5, 2006

Today I am reminded of a dream that the Lord gave me when I first heard His call. I could not fully understand its meaning at that time, but as He took me through many experiences over the years, its meaning became clearer and clearer. It is obvious that this dream was not only a word for me but it is for all who have been called to this walk.

In the dream “I was transported to a stronghold like a huge castle way up in the sky. I knew that the upkeep of this castle was the work of slaves who were ruled over and driven by an “ogre” or a giant barbarian or tyrant. It was my understanding that I was in that place so that I could find my way out of that place. It was a long, long way down and the heavy iron door was bolted with a huge lock.

As I looked around the place I found a long handle cradled above the door. I pulled it and the huge strong door came open. As I looked down I could not fathom how I would ever get back all the way down to earth; the height made me dizzy. Then a rope ladder unfolded from under the opened door; this was the way down but it was really dangerous and terrifying.

The first part of the ladder had handrails on each side; this gave me a sense of security. So I took hold of the handrails and held tightly as I began to slowly make my way down. I was alright until I was down a short ways and the handrails disappeared. Now I had to just balance myself and make my way down without looking back. My heart was racing.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Finally I made it to the bottom and was so relieved but that lasted only a short time. Almost immediately I was informed that I would be transported back up to the castle because now I knew the way out I would be able to lead the others out as well. And so it went.”  (End of dream)

From the foundation of the world, God has called a people to deliver creation from the bondage of this carnal man that is keeping it in darkness and death. This carnal beastly man is not a person that is going to appear and suddenly put everyone under its power; this carnal beastly man is humanity devoid of God’s Spirit.

John taught plainly that not all spirits are of God. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.” (I John 4:1-3)

The bolted door in the dream is the door of our hearts. The “tyrant” is the carnal mind and the key laying on top of the door is Jesus Christ. The strong man has securely bolted the door so that we are locked into a system of worldly religion that we cannot be freed of on our own.

Christ in you is the key above the locked door. Carnal man has bolted the door but Christ in you is above it all and He is able to unlock the door. Many have been locked into this castle in the sky by their carnal minds. Our carnal minds have trapped us in these “heavens” of religiosity; that is why that castle was way up in the sky.

But there is a people who will find that key and will make their way out of the system. They will first do it for themselves, and then by example, they will show the way to those who are hearing the call but are still in bondage. They will prove to all that it is possible to love God and to know Him outside of the system. Yes, there is life outside of this religious man-made order.

When one enters a conversation about God, the first question asked is usually, “What church do you belong to?” When you tell them that you do not go to church, they right away classify you as a backslider. They cannot see how it is possible to serve God and not go to a church.

Yet, the only way that any man can know God is by the Spirit of Christ that has come in his or her flesh. Jesus said that God must be worshipped in Spirit and in truth.  Any spirit that offers a God outside of the One who has come to dwell by the Spirit within our hearts is not the true Spirit of God.

The carnal mind is at enmity against God. “For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law (Word) of God, nor indeed can it be.” (Rom. 8:6-7)

This may be difficult to grasp but it is truth that must embraced and experienced. All religions are based on an outer god and as long as we still see Him outside of having come in the flesh, we are still in bondage to our carnal minds or the carnal ideas of our leaders.

Accepting Jesus as our Savior consists of opening our hearts to Him and letting Him in. It is then that by His Holy Spirit He begins to unlock the door that will make us free. The way out of our carnal thinking is narrow and can be frightening. We have been so dependent on our carnal ability to reason things out.   We have needed the structure of the church and so it takes faith and determination to keep walking away from that support. But the Christ within is our hope of glory. He will not fail us. As we yield to Him, He will bring us all the way out of this man-made bondage into the “liberty of the sons of God.”

Christ in us the true basis for our fellowship. It is as we walk in Him who is our Light that we have fellowship with one another and that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. (See 1 John1:7)

The liberty of the sons consists of knowing this Christ within and of walking each day trusting that He is taking us all the way to the Father one step at a time. The liberty of the sons consists of being delivered from the burden of a dead “outer” religion. “Because the creation will be delivered from the bondage of corruption (death) into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” (Rom. 8:21)

This is the deliverance that will bring the entire creation out from under the burden of death and the grave. It is to know that God through Jesus Christ come in the flesh has made us free from serving the god of this world or of the religions of this world. Deliverance is to know the One true God.

God sends evangelists and preachers to call people to Christ but, more often than not, these very same preachers who present the beautiful Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people, also ensnare them into churches that worship a God outside of the One within. The reason for this is that most of them are still very much in darkness themselves; they are in need of deliverance.

The word of Jesus to the Scribes and Pharisees of His days applies to these preachers: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte (convert), and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.” (Matt. 23:15)

The devil is the deceiver. Like a snake in the grass, he hides his crooked moves and watches our every reaction while we go on unaware of his presence.

The devil works through our carnal minds convincing believers that God looks upon them as mere humans who can only get His favor by doing good works and spending hours in prayer begging. The devil is the accuser of the brethren!

Such thoughts are the result of the teachings of a church that has kept men in darkness. Jesus called it “the blind leading the blind” and the result is that they fell into a dark ditch.

There are so many hungry hearts who are striving to love God. The truth of the matter is that in order to love Him we have to learn to receive His love. Before we know Him, God loves us and it is His love that teaches us to love Him. It is His love that teaches us to keep His Word and it is His love that brings us all the way to the image of His Son. His love is what draws us to Him in the first place.

Men through the tree of knowledge have set aside God’s love and have set out to explore His creation without knowing Him. Thanks to high technology, humans are beginning to explore other planets and other worlds around them, but in spite of their acquired knowledge they are still just as blind to the truth and cannot see the real creation of which they are a part.

It is only in Jesus Christ that man is able to begin to see the light, for Jesus is the Light of the world. Without this Light, man can neither see nor understand the mighty universe that God has created and much less comprehend that there is another realm of life that we cannot see with our natural eye. This realm is the Kingdom of God as Jesus told Nicodemus “you cannot see the kingdom unless you are born again. And you cannot enter the Kingdom of God unless you are born of water and of the Spirit.” (Paraphrased from John chapter three)

What we have seen collectively so far and shared with one another is as they say “mind boggling” but it is only a drop in the bucket of what is still to be discovered. As a matter of fact, if God permits, it will take eternity for us to search out the unsearchable riches of Christ.

Paul who was given a glance into the third “heaven,” that is the creation beyond the one we are in now, penned these words, “To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all people see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord…” (Eph. 1:8-11)

Is there a more powerful word of knowledge written in our Bible than this one? Only when God’s Holy Spirit shines His light upon these words do we begin to get a glimpse of the scope of God’s purpose for us and for His entire creation.

If we try to summarize what Paul was writing to the Ephesians church, we may say that he, Paul, was called out from among the saints with the specific purpose of opening people’s eyes to the intent and purpose of God for His creation. We could also say that “God created the world and the people of the world, but none were able to know Him because they were in darkness; these were the worlds that were. But then God created Adam and Eve, a man in His image and likeness. This creation man could know God because he was created in Christ from the beginning.

“Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, ‘Let us make man in Our image, according to our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle; over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Gen. 1:24-27)

Before God set the man in His image in the earth, the Bible says that He created the living creatures and the beast of the earth. We do not really know what kinds of living creatures were in the earth then or who the “beast” was but archeologists are still finding fossils of creatures that have been in the earth for millions of years.  Then on the sixth day God created the man Adam and Eve in His image and after His likeness.

We know that the days of creation were not twenty-four-hour days as we have today. They were periods of darkness followed by light and these periods could have been thousands of years long if not more.

We also know that as part of creation, some were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. When writing to the church Paul said, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world…” (Eph. 1:3-4a)

There is a company of people who were in Christ from the foundation of the world. These are blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ. Paul was one of these and he knew his calling. He called it the “high calling of God in Christ.”

We also know that we have been called to this high calling because He has revealed it to us. We could think that we have made all this up, but God is faithful to show us that we are not alone; there are many who have heard the same.

We were chosen for a purpose in Christ, even before God created these creatures and the beast, we were chosen in Him! We know that the Adam man was created separately from the rest; he had a day of creation all to himself. And we know that he was called to have dominion over God’s creation.

For a time, man gave his dominion over to the serpent – the one who has been working through our carnal minds. Nevertheless, through the process of re-birth, Christ in man is taking back his dominion and we are coming to the image that we were created to bear in the first place.

Genealogies record that Adam was a son of God and that he and all his descendants were created to have dominion over the rest of God’s creation in the earth. They were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. This means that within them, they had the ability to know God and to communicate with Him through the Spirit. They are the ones who have been able to respond to the voice of the Son of God.

They were created to bring the light of God into an earthly world of darkness. God chose a people in Christ who would follow the Light (truth) and be called to reveal that Light to those who were in darkness and unable to see.

It was in the garden that this Adam creation was thrust into the same darkness as the rest of creation. It was when Adam and Eve heard the serpent talking to them that they fell into disobedience. Up to that time, they could hear God through the spirit (in the cool of the day means in the breeze or by the Spirit), but now a voice came to them through their mind and that voice deceived them.

It was through the sin of disobedience that the Adamic creation fell into utter darkness, totally separated from God. It could not deliver itself let alone God’s creation. God needed to somehow send His Word to reconnect this man to Himself.

Then God saw the earth and He saw that it was so evil that it grieved Him and He repented that He had made it. At that time, there were giants living in the earth because the sons of God had gone into the daughters of men!

“Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Gen. 6:5)

It was then that Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord and was given explicit details about building an ark to save himself and his family, as well as all the seeds of the earth. Peter says that the flood that destroyed this first world in the days of Noah is an antitype for the baptism of repentance that now saves us.

The flood that removed the people from the earth speaks of the water baptism (I Pet. 3:21) that we go through when we identify ourselves with the death of Jesus on the cross. Water baptism is the sign that we first reckon ourselves to be as dead as those who were in the flood, but by faith our souls are saved and we are raised to new life in Christ.

Peter also writes about the day of fire that will come to purge the earth and destroy all that is ungodly. This is an antitype of the baptism by fire. “But the heavens and the earth which now exist are kept in store by the same word, reserved for fire until the Day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (II Pet. 3:7)

In Noah and his family, God preserved the Seed that would produce faithful Abraham, and in Christ, God preserved the Seed that that would deliver creation.

God sent His word through the prophets, but they stoned the prophets. God knew all this would happen and after He had sent all His best prophets, He put His mighty plan into high gear and sent His Son in the form of a man. They nailed Him to the cross, but that was part of the plan. They could not have done it if He had not laid His life down in obedience to His Father.

When they did it, they accomplished God’s purpose for redemption. “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” (I Cor. 2:7-8)

The crucifixion of our Lord was a triumph, not a defeat! It was through His death that life was opened unto us!

Because they do not understand, some are quick to turn away from being called “elect of God.” The truth of the matter is that Christ is the Elect and if we are in Him and doing His will then we are elected to the same calling.

Christ in us is the hope of glory. He is the only hope that the earthly creation has for deliverance from the cycle of death and corruption in which it is trapped. When Christ comes in to our spirit then by His Holy Spirit, He woos our souls and this union produces the birth of a new Christ creation. Christ in the Spirit and our souls in Him. It is when we are fully in Him that our bodies will be conformed to His body of glory.

While Christ is being formed in us, some are called with specific missions. Paul explains that “When He (Jesus) ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men. (Now this, ‘He ascended- what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?” (Eph.4:8-9)

Jesus descended into the darkness of the earth to preach to the souls who were captives in the Old Testament. The gifts that He gave to men were abilities to also descend into the depth of men’s darkened hearts and show them the way to the glorious Light that delivers them. This Light is the Word come in the flesh. Some men are given as gift ministries to reach in the darkness of men’s hearts and bring them to the Light of God.

Jesus called the Pharisees “sons of hell” because the bondage of following a god outside of the One who indwells us is hell. People are dry and thirsty for a drink of this pure water of the Spirit and they can never quench their thirst. It was in hell that the rich man Lazarus was begging for a drink of water.

It is hell when the soul that is thirsting for a drink of the pure river of God’s Spirit can only find water polluted by the filth of man’s garbage.

David cried out to God, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I appear before God?” (Psa. 42:1-2)  This is what we have been feeling as we groped in the dark corridors of outer religion.

Jesus told the woman at the well, “Whosever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13b-14)

This woman had known five husbands. She was seeking protection, support, fellowship, provision and all the good things that a husband provides for a wife. She was as the bride seeking for her true husband and going from church to church forever disappointed. But Jesus gave her the key, “The water that I give you will become in you a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

The fountain that Jesus gives is within. We cannot find it any place else. If He sends us to any of these organized places of worship for a season, it will mostly be to prime someone’s well within but it will not be to quench our thirst. In Christ we will never thirst again. His Spirit springs up within and waters the garden of our soul before we are ever dry. We may receive a refreshing in fellowship with believers, but if this is the only water we get, we will thirst again.

When the Lord began to open up the heavens and to unveil some of His mysteries to us, we began to understand the plan. This is what we need to hold onto and not deviate from.

There is a people, chosen in Christ from the beginning and called to deliver creation from the darkness that is causing death and corruption. It is this people that have been thrust into the darkness of this world so that, by the Christ Light that Jesus placed within them, they may find their way out of that darkness and be an example to others.

This same people, the matured sons of God, are called to reveal that Light to those in darkness, that in turn those in darkness may receive that Light and find their way out by that Light within them!! This is the path of true deliverance.

We are a people who have been in darkness, but He has stirred up our nests so that we could no longer be satisfied in our pews. He has brought us through trials to build our faith that we may not be fearful.  We have heard the call and have followed His Light. We are the ones who must find the key to the way out of the bondage of man-made religions. Christ in us is the key and the only way out.

Evangelists have been faithful to present that Light through the Gospel, but too often the people have been turned over to pastors and teachers who were in darkness themselves and have directed them to their own works rather than to the Light within.

But God is not mocked. In Christ He has made the way. There is a people who believe in the Light. They have followed Him out of bondage and have received His word of truth. They will answer the call of this groaning creation and make them free.

Recently I was reminded of a time when Jesus went up to Jerusalem and visited a pool by the Sheep Gate. In Hebrew, the pool is called Bethesda, having five porches.

“In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water, then whosoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. (John 5:3-4)

This place was constantly busy, and this lame man had been laying there for thirty-eight years. This man was unable to walk and when the angel came to stir the waters he could not reach the waters in time. So he could never be healed of his affliction; he had no man to help him.

What a frustrating situation that must have been for this afflicted man! Yet he had been lying in that same spot for thirty-eight years still hoping that someone would help him and his time to be healed would come.

And so, spiritually speaking, it has been the same for many and for us spiritually speaking. We have been as it were, lying under the care of the five porches, the five fold ministries that Jesus gave to teach us and mature us.

But these ministries were never meant for people to just lay there and depend on others. They are given to bring us to the place where we find the Christ within and hear His voice.  The ministries are given to bring us to that place of hearing His voice ourselves.

And when we pray for one another it is to join our faith to the one in need. But it is the Lord within that one who gives the healing and meets the need.  Today, Jesus is speaking directly to us through His Spirit. He may speak directly to our hearts or oftentimes in a dream, but He expects us to hear and take up our bed and walk.

Jesus simply spoke the word…”Rise, take up your bed and walk. And that day was the Sabbath.” The scribes and Pharisees who kept the people under the law were outraged by this healing; they came against the living word. But a new door had been opened that day. It was not by the keeping of the law that God answered, it was by the voice of the word made flesh.

Lord help us to keep our ear tuned to your word that we might hear and receive at your Hand. From that day forward this lame man never needed to return to that communal pool. He might have returned to help others but he was healed and delivered from needing a man.

Recently, as I was called upon to give a eulogy for a friend who went to be with the Lord, the words of Jesus rang in my heart with a clearer meaning than ever before. I believe we are coming so close to the time of manifested resurrection on this side of the veil. Jesus told Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)

These powerful words are full of meaning for us. Those who had died in the Old Testament but who were waiting for this resurrection were raised from the graves at that time. They received their bodies of resurrection on the spot, and they were seen in Jerusalem. “And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.” (Matt. 27:52-53)

Since His resurrection, the saints who die in Christ do not go to the grave. Their earthly remains do but they by-pass the grave and pick up their new bodies as they go. This is why Paul could declare that if his earthly tabernacle (body) was destroyed, he had one from heaven (see II Cor. 5)

The overcomers in Christ are in this first (best) resurrection. They are not waiting for a day or time of resurrection; Jesus is the resurrection and the life. When we enter into Christ, we enter into resurrection right here on this side of the veil!! If we leave this body, we pick up our robes (new bodies) on the way out!!  The bodies of glory will be made manifest on this side of the veil when He appears with the saints.

There is much more that could be developed on this but may this line encourage you and give you more joy, peace and determination to press toward that goal.

As I am writing this study, my good friend Joan Wilson calls me with a “parable” that the Lord gave her for today. I am touched by the words I hear and I realize that it depicts a lot of the emotions that some of us may be facing concerning our union with our wonderful Bridegroom.

When we hear someone say, “He is in you!” We think, “Of course, I know that He is in me!” We may even feel insulted that someone did not know that we knew this! When we read that it is the God inside of us that we must honor and not the gods of outer religions, we may respond with “Tell us something we don’t know!”

To this last comment I must respond and say, “In Christ there is nothing we don’t already know. The word you read or hear is not meant to teach us something we don’t already know. It is meant to awaken the witness within so we can say Amen to it. All that we need to know is contained in the Christ within.”

This is what John meant when he wrote, “But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.” (I John 2:27)

Yes the Christ knows all things. He brings them to our understanding as we need them; we need to be ready and willing to receive them.

This is an important truth. What we hear from our preachers and teachers are only meant to awaken the witness of the Spirit of Truth within. Then we are taught by the Spirit. What the Spirit brings up to our understanding is not knowledge that we store like in a library. It comes to us by the witness of the Spirit.  If what we hear does not witness at the time, it may not be time for us to know it. If there is a quickening within, then we know it is truth for us today.

In time the truth will be made known but we are not always ready to face it, or perhaps it is not pertinent to us at the time. How many times has the Lord tried to tell us something that we did not want to receive? We firmly pushed it aside, out of mind, to deal with it later; our soil needed more plowing.

We know that, from the time of our conversion, our soul has been wooed by His Holy Spirit. He has been preparing us for the time when the Bridegroom will fully reveal Himself to us, and we will fully give ourselves to Him to be as He is.

It is a marriage feast as His Word is being revealed to us. Our hearts have leaped for joy at the wonder of it all and now we are coming face to face with the time of full union with our Bridegroom. Our souls have feasted on His Spirit, and soon we will join Him in body as well! The marriage will be consummated as He appears and we totally disappear in Him.  The time of our complete transformation is at hand.

Emotions are running high. Yes, there is great joy and anticipation, but there is also fear of the unknown. Could this fear keep us from entering His chambers? Joan Wilson was able to capture that picture in a poignant little story that she simply calls:

There was a young woman who fell in love with a man through correspondence. Friends arranged their meeting by mail, for they lived on opposite sides of the world. At first, they wrote rather formally, then as time passed, the relationship grew into affectionate intimacy. They were telling each other things they’d never told anyone. Each had opened their heart to the other, and when the man asked her to marry him, the woman said yes. He was so captivating, so wonderful in his letters, she could not say no.

They began to make plans for the wedding, exchanging more and more letters. One day as she sat in her bedroom, reading his last letter again, there was a knock at her door. She got up, walked down the hall and as she approached the door—heard a voice calling her name. Instinctively she knew it was Him!

She stopped, unable to move at first, then reached for the door knob. He called louder, “It’s me! I’m here, let me in!”

She gripped the knob, but could not turn it. She stood frozen, unable to move the more he shouted her name. And then she slowly turned away from the door and retraced her steps. His voice followed her all the way down the hall.

She entered her bedroom and closed the door. His cries and the pounding on the door were muffled, but she could still hear him calling her name. Finally his voice grew dim and the pounding ceased. She sat down, opened his last letter and began to read it over and over again. She was frightened, afraid to meet him face to face, for he was so awesome in his letters that she knew if she really met him she would be completely overcome.

She would lose the last little semblance of control she had. For, in meeting him, knowing him through his letters, she still managed some particle of control. She could read or not read, at her leisure, enjoy the pleasure of anticipation and still be an individual, separate from him. Instinctively she knew that to meet him face to face would be the end of her separateness. She did not know how much she valued being separate until he began to pound on the door.

This is the church today… More in love with the written word of God than with God Himself.

Because of His love,
