JN 18:37 You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

JN 18:38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked.

Pilate believed he knew what the truth was. Roman justice was his truth. He believed he had the power of life and death over the man standing before him. He had very little patience for these tiresome religious squabbles among these Jews. However there was something not quite right about this Nazarene or the situation he now found himself in. He was disquieted in his mind and he had no idea why.

Pilate is a man. He stands in the place we all must come to when confronted with the judgment of Jesus Christ. You see the truth of it is that we are all Pilate. We are all confronted at some point in our walk on this earth with the truth. And we all must ask the question that Pilate had to ask to the only person in all creation who can answer it. Then we either wash our hands as they lead the man to the cross or we follow Him to that cross and await the answer.

The Western World views truth in a variety of ways:

    1) Philosophically – Man-made set of rules to live by that he can feel relatively safe and secure in his life and way of life. This is problematic at best because differing philosophies lead to conflicts.

    2) Scientifically – One plus one equals two. Factually correct but offers no real sensual satisfaction. Also, mathematics does not always “add up” in the spiritual realm. This will be explained later.

    3) Doctrinally – Set of religious laws and doctrines based on written accounts in ancient texts. This is open to flawed interpretation and runs the gamut from Gnosticism to strict Pharisaic adherence to the biblical Old Testament Law.

So What is truth? (I am now speaking to the Son of God) If truth is a correct set of doctrines by which we believe then what is truth? Is truth Armenian Doctrine or Calvinist? Is truth the Baptist doctrine? Or perhaps Church of Christ?  What about Catholic theology or Seventh Day Adventist. Each of these doctrinal truths are believed by millions in the Christian religion but which one is correct?

Watch out! There is a trap here. If only one is the correct then all the rest are false. And if all the rest are false then all the rest came from the mind of Satan and leads to death and Hell. So which one is correct. Which one will get you the prize. Which one will please God and cause Him to view you as worthy to receive His blessing and enter the Kingdom of God?

Son of God you already know the answer. Truth is none of these. Truth is not a philosophy, or a fact, or a doctrine. Truth was standing in front of Pilate and Truth is at your Stone Pavement (Gabbatha).
